Well, Didier, I respect you far too much to wish to "erode your good mood" The fact is, and, at the risk of seeming one of the "Church of Patrick"'s zealots, I am regularly amazed at his facility in forming and keeping to his own benevolent, non-assuming policies. It is far too easy for those of hard-won knowledge to assume choices they make are the best, if not the only ones. We must all be on guard to avoid becoming rigid and equipped with invisible blinders.

Agree with choice.

No doubt about it, EXT4 is an excellent file system.
Just as there is still use for EXT2, I find EXT3 is better than EXT4 for certain purposes.
I use EXT4 for very large database storage, as the behavior with a wide range of file sizes and rather large tree populations works for that scenario. For small system use on older laptops, ext3 is faster, smaller, and does everything I need. For most virtual machines there is not reason to use journals, so ext2 may serve. I have tested many others, and many are sufficient for a small system, but few perform well for a database server. When you mix in device encryption most of them degrade significantly. EXT4 maintains performance better than others.

Since slack is so very good for so MANY uses, we need to ensure that it has the file system options to support optimal performance for each use case. I am pretty happy with they way it is now, any change that makes it less useful would NOT make me happy!
