Stupid Create User question

Heya, i just installed, it works fine, but now i think im having a brainfreeze, i just made a new user so im not using root with the command:
useradd -gusers -p12345 -d/home/chris -M chris (just assume the pass is 12345 :P)

not the pass just doesnt work when i go to login, i can logi with "su" as root, but i just cant login normally, just says incorrect.

please tell me i just forgot something in the year i havent used linux?

Also, the reason that the -p didn't do what you expected was because the value should have been the encrypted password, not the plain text 12345.
