As of last year I believe it is illegal to break a digital lock in Canada even if copyright is not infringed. This completely negates any fair use provisions of copyright law and is wholly unethical. Following the law to the letter does not make you a good person, just as breaking it does not make you a bad one (depending, of course, on which laws are broken). Just because the politicians are literally being bribed by lobbyists for copyright-owning companies does not make it unethical to install and use libdvdcss. Of course, it is not LQ's mantra to assist in violating laws, but breaking digital locks is a grey area in many countries and may be explicitly legal in some. Just because copyright owners want me to buy a standalone DVD player and big screen TV while I've got a perfectly good blu-ray drive, a decent monitor and decent PC speakers already does not make optical disc drives obsolete.
