streaming with xine/gxine

How do you get xine to stream media? I'm using gxine 0.4.6, mozilla 1.7.12, xine plugins 1.0.1.

Created the links in mozilla/plugins to gxine/plugins as suggested at mozilla.org. Could not find the gxineplugin.a mentioned there, but did find gxineplugin.so and gxineplugin.la.
Tried making several different links in $HOME/.mozilla/plugins to the gxine plugins.

If I manage to get the stream information gxine works including the bbc streams other users complain about.

After installing realplayer the trailers at real.com play but a window pops up asking me to create a mozilla user profile.

Is mozplugger the solution to this mess? If so how do you prevent conflicts with the plugins already installed?

Getting most confused

Edit/ Just to be more concrete, clicking on the video for Ross Rebagliati on this page;
http://archives.cbc.ca/IDD-1-41-1374...ter_1984_2002/
results in gxine opening in a seperate window, but no streaming.
If I close mozilla and dig through the code on that page gxine can stream the video by running
gxine <http://ms.radio-canada.ca/archives/2004/en/wmv/winterolympics19980217et1.wmv>

There are users streaming with gxine or totem. It could depend on the versions of the software or possibly the alignment of the planets. After a few more attempts I'll probably give in and install mplayer. Thanks for the advice.

In part it depends on how linux friendly the site is. You also need the appropriate plugins in your browsers directory and your player must have the appropriate codecs. The codecs are available at the mplayer site and there is a Slackware package at the linuxpackages site.

The usual cnn site embeds the video stream in the page and it was difficult to pick out the stream. In response to requests by non-MS
users they came up with this site

http://www.cnn.com/video/player/player.html

I have no problem streaming windows video content at the above site.

The problem with the gxine plugin is that it doesnt say windows media player on the title. So sometimes it wont be recognized on those sites looking for wmp. This can be easily changed prior to compiling. I know I posted before about this. Also mplayerplug-in works very well all sites except the ones that use activex. Since I have mozilla and firefox, I have the gxine plugin (modified) installed on one browser and mplayerplug-in on the other. Both work great.

by the way muddy your site didn't work with either mplayerplug-in or gxine. But it did work with a windows version of firefox installed on wine 0.9.7. I use mediaplayer connectivity and the windows plugins (just for detection), which then open up mplayer. A few other little hacks and it all works. I though at first that it didn't work because it was canadian stuff. silly me.

I'll assume this is the thread http://www.linuxquestions.org/questi...72#post1762172.
Looks like the cbc stream was a poor example . Honestly,I'm having trouble with sites others report working.

That cnn link also works for me. I had no idea it existed. I'm one of those cranks who writes letters of complaint, good to see it works occasionally.

It worked perfectly for me in Epiphany with mplayer plugin on linux. Chances are you need to install win32 codecs.

I was having issues with watching streaming media in firefox, and then I found a REALLY cool extension called "download embedded". It allows you to download the link in the page that is embedded, in this case streaming video. Save the link somewhere and then open it up with a compatible player.

Good luck!

That extension is listed for firefox, not sure if it would work in plain mozilla. It looks interesting, will keep it in mind.

Found a working solution for my setup. The answer was installing kaffeine with the kaffeine-mozilla plugin.I suspect the original problem was the missing gxineplugin.a mentioned in my first post.

Thanks everyone for the input
