Works perfectly for me using mplayer and mplayerplug-in (you'll need the win32 codecs as well). Get them by either downloading the "all" codecs pack from the mplayer site (install to /usr/lib/win32/) or by finding a pre-built .tgz.
www.slacky.it is a good site for slackware downloads, it lists required dependencies for packages (though the site is in Italian it's not that hard to use), the other main site is www.linuxpackages.net. (Just in case you weren't aware of either).
Either uninstall the gxine plugin, delete the gxine plugin or, if you're using firefox, go to Edit/Preferences/Downloads/View & Edit Actions and change the default actions for eac media type to whichever plugin/media player is desired.

Ok, how did you set it up so that mplayer is the default media player? I've installed the codecs to /usr/lib/win32, but when I click on a link, I don't get anything?
You need to check that the mplayerplug-ins are installed to the right browser plugins folder and you need to get rid of the gxine plugins or explicitly tell the browser to use the mplayerplug-in-XX.so instead.
Personally I don't like gxine and so uninstall it leaving mplayer and mplayerpug-in for the browser and xine for films disks.
