Strange XMMS problem

I have a very strange problem with xmms. It doesn't play audio cds (cda files) while it can easily be done with totem or rhytmbox. As I say it doesn't play, it's not really true - the slider goes on but there is no sound. However, I can hear music with same settings when playing with xmms mp3 or ogg files. I tried deleting .xmms folder (maybe I have made some stupid settings) but it didn't help, then checked what plugins are enabled (read cd was enabled) but everything seems ok.

It's not really a big problem because I can also use totem and other players but I prefer listening with xmms due its compact frontend. And also I am very curious about this strange xmms behaviour.

Hello

Go to Preferences -> Audio I/O plugins

Select CD Audio player and click on configure

Are the device parameters correct?
Is Digital audio extraction enabled?

Have a lot of fun

Thanks. It helped, because analog mode was enabled. Don't know why analog mode didn't work with my audio cd.

You probably don't have the audio cable from the CD drive to the sound card.

My sound card is integrated Realtec'97 so cd-rom cable goes directly into my motherboard.

It's quite common that Analog does not work. Analog requires a cable that goes directly into soundcard from the CD drive.

Digital will work no matter what(assuming your PC is fast enough, which i can almost guarantee that it is), and it actually sounds better and can use visualizations and equalizers.

So if your PC can support it, just use Digital.

Thanks for explanation, liquidtenmillion.
It could happen because I've recompiled my 2.6 kernel with scsi-cdrom support recently. So my cdrom became /dev/sdc from /dev/hdc. Maybe that's why analog mode doesn't work anymore.

My thanks to Koen Plessers for pointing me in the right direction (to the XMMS prefs) following a kernel recompile and subsequent weirdness from XMMS. It had automatically set the output plugin to be OSS when of course it should have been ALSA.

After changing that and a couple of output settings in Kmix that was me playing MP3s with XMMS once again.

Kind regards,

dkpw
