strange x server problem

hello all!

i've been running slackware linux 10.0 with 2.6.8.1 kernel and dropline gnome for a few months and i absolutely love it!

however i ran into a strange problem yesterday. when i rebooted my box and tried to login from gdm to my usual user account all i got was this empty x screen (no bars, menus, panels, icons) and a cursor. after a few seconds the screen returned to the gdm. i tried to login again several times but with the same result. then i tried login as root and everything worked as usual.
i reset my user's password but this didn't solve it.

i should mention that before rebooting i installed wireless-tools and the ipw2100 package (which i removed later but didn't help with my problem). also i'm pretty sure it's not the wireless-tools.

so what is the matter with my box? should i remove the user and create a new one? what else can i do?

Hi, welcome to LinuxQuestions!

I'm certainly no expert on this sort of thing, but a good starting point would be to have a look at /var/log/ folder, where X should have logged all it's error messages etc. I can't think what the name of the file is off the top of my head as I'm not at home to check on my slackware machine. But I think with your config, it should be X.org rather than XFree86 that you'll be using.

The XFree86 log file is called XFree86.0.log, and you should see something similar for X.org

Have a look in there and see if it gives you a clue as to what the specific problem is. OR have a search on these forums, as I'm sure I've read of people having this problem before on here.

Hope that helps to start with. Let us know how you get on!

Steve

wow stevek1979, thanx for the fast answer!

i found these two lines in xorg.log:

Code:
Could not init font path element /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/local , removing from list!
AUDIT: Tue Aug 24 15:05:19 2004: 1921 X: client 5 rejected from local host
BUT these two lnes are also in my log file when i login as root...

P.S: how do i make a program start on linux bootup? specifically i want to start the lamp speedstep daemon, gShield firewall and laptop-mode tools. when i installed all these they added an executable script into /etc/init.d/ but i dont see them start up on boot. should i just add them to rc.local instead?

Cool Well done!

Well done on sorting out your own problem alexisph!

As for your post with the output from the X.org.log file, I have to admit that I don't know what those errors mean - oh, and sorry I didn't post back sooner, some of us have to work
I think, from looking at it, the first error is X is reporting that there are no fonts that it can use in that particular folder; this isn't really a problem I don't think, as if you take a look in that folder path, you'll find that there are several other folders that also contain fonts.

As for starting up these services automatically, adding them to rc.local should do the job as this is called at the end of /etc/rc.d/rc.M which is the script file that runs when Slackware starts up in one of the multi user run levels, and starting up to the gdm login screen is a multi user run level (run level 4 in Slackware).

As you can see, /etc/rd.d/local.rc is called at the end of the startup script, so adding relevant commands to local.rc should do the job!

Code:
# Start the local setup procedure.
if [ -x /etc/rc.d/rc.local ]; then
  . /etc/rc.d/rc.local
fi

# All done.
Also, I think I'm right in saying that if you have a look, you'll find that by default, Slackware doesn't have/use an init.d file.

Good luck!

Steve

Don't know if this will help anyone now, but when I've had similar problems in the past, this has solved them for me.

Code:
cd /tmp
rm -r *
rm -r .*
Usually something left lingering around from a bad close. Note: this is a bad idea if you actually store stuff in /tmp.

This also works for a lot of other issues, like sound stops working for a user and such.
