Strange behavior from X: screen freezing, keyboard disabled, mouse continues working

I recently installed Slackware 13, and have been having issues getting X working correctly.

When I first tried startx, KDE initially seemed to be working fine, going through its initialization, but before finishing it seemed to freeze and the keyboard, which had previously been working fine (including during the KDE initialization), ceased to work (not even capslock, numlock, etc.), but the mouse still worked. I tried configuring X with X -configure but the result was the same.

I have tried all the window managers shipped with Slackware; the results were similar: not long after starting up, everything would freeze, and the keyboard ceased functioning. Fluxbox and XFCE froze up immediately. twm worked until I tried to move a window. FVWM2 worked initially; I could move windows but they left distortions in their wake, and it eventually froze and the keyboard became disabled. wmaker and Blackbox were similar to FVWM2, but the distortions were different, as was how long they worked.

A couple things have me puzzled...
- Why does the keyboard stop working at the precise moment that X freezes up?
- Why does the mouse keep working? Even when everything else on the screen appears completely frozen, the mouse cursor can move around just fine.

The only similar-sounding problem I can find is this one, which is discouraging; that problem was apparently caused by the Intel driver; it seems the only 'fix' was to upgrade to a newer X and a newer Linux kernel, which only partially fixed the problem...

However, I have gotten X working on this computer in the past (with Ubuntu, Debian, Slackware 11.0, several liveCDs, etc.) so the problem should be fixable. Especially considering I got it working with Slackware 11.0 (years ago), I'm not sure that updating X or the Linux kernel would do anything.

Any ideas?
