still problems with sound.

I've looked through the previous threads on this subject matter... but no posts seem to fix this problem: I have sound that works perfect when I'm logged into KDE under root. When I log into my primary user, I have sound (but it sounds like garbage) and I can't access KMIXER or sound controls (it says that no devices exist). I've already added my primary user to the group "audio" and have entirely run out of options... anyone know what's going on?

You may have already seen these but just incase the following has worked for me on a few occasions:

1. Make user a member of group audio

2. Run alsamixer (if you have alsa installed) and make sure nothing is muted and set the volumes, then run alsactl store
With alsa installed you can test it as your user by running (for example)

aplay /opt/kde/share/sounds/pop.wav

3. Try setting the following as root:

chmod 666 /dev/dsp*
chmod 666 /dev/mixer*
chmod 666 /dev/audio*
chmod 666 /dev/sequencer*

Your suggestion is ok idris, maybe the dev files do not belong to the audio group (or don't have the correct permission for group audio)...

When I had thisproblem, I added my user to the sys group and it cleared it right up.

ok, I have sound in my other user acount, but whenever I try to run kmixer or volume control in GUI, I get this error message: "Sorry, no mixer elements and/or devices found." alsamix and everything looks perfectly fine (there's no muting), but I still get this error

No devices?

It does really sound (forgive the pun) that your account does not have rights to the /dev/devices that are controlling your sound system

Did you try chmod 666 on those devices listed above?

In addition do you get sound when at the console as your normal user ,using aplay for example?

The other thing you could try is run alsaconf again. I've seen that suggested related to this error....
