still no module support for new kernel??

I built kernel 2.4.29 two more times last night. My result is that I have a working and bootable kernel 2.4.29, but no modules for sound will load with alsaconf.

I am wondering if this has to do with my link for /usr/src/linux which still points to my old 2.4.26 kernel.

Here's what I did (line by line this time and I saw no errors) as root:

untarred kernel 2.4.29 in /usr/src
cd /usr/src/linux-2.4.29 and make mrproper
rm -r /lib/modules/2.49
cp /usr/src/linux-2.4.26/.config /usr/src/linux-2.4.29/.config
make oldconfig
prompted for a couple new settings-responded with m
make dep
make clean
make bzImage
make modules
make modules_install
mv /boot/vmlinuz /boot/vmlinuz6.old
cp arch/i386/boot/bzImage /boot/vmlinuz
mv /boot/System.map /boot/System6.map
cp System.map /boot/System.map

pico /etc/lilo.conf
add slack.old to item selection
lilo

reboot

My new selection for kernel 2.4.29 booted fine. uname -r showed 2.4.29. After I logged in as root and ran alsaconf, alsa couldn't find any sound modules.

The modules directory is in /lib/modules/2.49

lsmod shows that some modules are being loaded-just not my sound modules.

How do I get these modules to be found??

did you build the alsa drivers from the alsa website ( just the driver package, not the lib, utils, etc.. you already have these).

2.4 kernels do not come with alsa drivers ( 2.6 kernels do though).

You need to rebuild ALSA for the new kernel. ALSA's looking for the old drivers yet.
Need to update that by recompiling alsa-driver package

ahhhh, ok. I was thinking it might be an alsa thing. I'll rebuild alsa. Sound support is in my kernel for an ESSSOLO1 as a module. I guess alsa will know what to do with that.

the sound support for 2.4 kernels are the oss modules ( which are different from the alsa modules).

go get the alsa-driver source from the alsa site, unpack it, and:

./configure --help

will give you the list of options. by default, it builds all the drivers but look in the output of the command above at the --with-cards option, find your driver and:

./configure --with-cards=<your card> ( this will build only the driver(s) you need, instead of all of them)
make
make install

then load your driver, set your mixer values, and you should be set.
