Steam problem - games won't work

Hello there.

I wonder if there is anybody else out there who have issue with Steam like mine?

The issue I have is that whenever I start any Steam game, nothing happens. After a minute or two fatal error shows up saying "Could not initialize platform API.".

Also I should add that I've been using Steam since it was officially released with no trouble until recently.

Steam is native, downloaded from alien's repo and all deps installed (flash-player, OpenAL).
Slackware64 14.1 - with multilib from alien.
NVIDIA driver v331.67 - 32 bit graphic support working.

Also I have noticed that the issue is happening only with games that require Steam to be running.
These that can be played without Steam, work just fine.
Some examples: Rochard, Splice.

Any suggestions or thoughts on the matter?

edit:
a bit more info at post 7
and here: post 15

Here is a log, showing start of 2 games - Rush, World of Goo:

hmm... guess start with, where did you get your steam / how did you install it?

Also, other games... doom3 in there (checking for 32 bit graphic support)

Is this the native steam or the wine one?

Got it from Alien's repo.
Like I said all non-Steam games work. Both 32 bit and 64 bit.
Client is native (would state so if that was not the case).

Also to add some details.
Some Steam games, start with black screen and after a minute or two the fatal error "Could not initialize platform API." shows up.

edit: added a log too

I haven't had any problems with the linux native Steam client. I've had a bunch with games not starting consistently via the WINE one since the 4/22 update. (And I've tried with games I can start independently of Steam, such as AI War or Skyward Collapse, which work just fine via WINE.)

Hi,

I use the native Steam client from Alienbob too.

Have you installed OpenAL for the Alienbob repo as well ?

Since this dependency is mentioned in the build dir of the Steam package, I admit that this package is a requirement just like flash-player.

And, if that helps, I've found out that some games requires the inetd daemon to be running if you plan to play a game online.

This daemon is used to create and manage the various TCP/UDP sockets requested from your games, e.g "Super Meat Boy" for example on my Slack box.

Hope this help.

try turning off the in game overlay
it's somewhere in the options

ERROR: ld.so: object '/home/heiser/.local/share/Steam/ubuntu12_64/gameoverlayrenderer.so' from LD_PRELOAD cannot be preloaded: ignored.

ldd /home/heiser/.local/share/Steam/ubuntu12_64/gameoverlayrenderer.so
will give you list of required libraries for this one (it will tell you if missing)

Also little something that I have found after I played with Steam a bit more.
Some games do work, but this games do not require Steam to work. They can be started without Steam to be running.
Some examples: Rochard, Electronic Super Joy, Splice

I have attached screenshots of the errors that I get on RUSH and Half-Life.
As you can see, the game RUSH starts with a empty black window and after a while the error shows up.
While Half-Life do not open even a window, just quits with fatal error.

I should also note that the game do not spill out any errors in terminal. Unless Steam is not running which spill out this (quiet normal):
Code:
./RUSH.bin.x86
[S_API FAIL] SteamAPI_Init() failed; SteamAPI_IsSteamRunning() failed.
[S_API FAIL] SteamAPI_Init() failed; unable to locate a running instance of Steam, or a local steamclient.dll.

You are in the 'publicbeta' client beta.

Maybe your issue have something to do with the steam public beta. Try to disable it (Steam->Settings, then in "Beta participation" choose Change, select "NONE -Opt out of all beta programs" and restart steam)

I've opted out of beta a few days ago.
Still the same problem.

Greetings
First, let me say that I have 4 versions of Steam and 5 versions of Wine on my main box running Slackware 14.0. I can run all versions of Half Life, including mods running on the Source engine. I can also run Deus Ex: The Human Revolution (in DX-11 mode), as well as native Linux steam games, of course. The large number of versions is to best support differing game requirements w/o "crosstalk".

One Steam is native Linux and three are Windows based, running in Wine. This may at first glance seem like an unholy mess but most of it, at least all the wine versioning (aside from base, system wine), is handled by PlayOnLinux, which handles versions of wine and steam on virtual drives. By launching Steam either from cli or from PoL started from cli, I get terminal output for errors. PoL makes it very simple and centralized to alter the most important libraries and their usage without having to wade through "wine regedit" and "winecfg" because all are in one place with PoL. Simple chores like wine version, "window captures mouse" or "offscreen rendering mode", "strict draw ordering", etc. are all in drop-downs and checkboxes on tabbed pages. This makes it very fast to either narrow down troubleshoot or just try settings to see what works best, while still retaining terminal output.

FWIW I have been doing this for 2 years without any sort of cross-corruption or problems other than game tweaks, causing them to refuse to run or crash. Once set, they all run perfectly. Perhaps PlayOnLinux might benefit you as well.

Pardon my mistake. I assumed by Half Life you may have meant many versions, including some that don't run (or not well) natively. FWIW, wine has gotten very good and many "windows" games run in it better than in Windows (lower latency kernel, superior tcp/ip stack, etc.) no need to buy, dual boot, and run real Windows.

Like I said I'm aware of WINE. I maintain some GOG games at appdb.
But I rather use my native games.

ok, so...
first of all, my bad for ldd as it probably doesn't give correct information in this case as steam preloads (uses) its own set of libraries
(can be accounted for, but not that simple)

what you can try is
LD_DEBUG=all steam

that will give fairly detailed info on every loaded library (including calls to their functions)
problem being too much detail so search for errors (id start from gameoverlayrenderer.so; also ld probably can give only errors but idk what flag)

what might help you more is to post on the steam forum/thing
since google didn't find others with this problem it may (or may not) be something on your system

Ok, I have noticed something that makes no sense to me.

Last night I decided to install Slackware on virtualbox and play around with Steam there, as to not screw my system.

What confused me is that same games that do not work on my real machine work just fine on virtualbox.
Some examples: Half-Life, Counter-Strike. Didn't test more as obviously they work.

Now what confused me is the fact that both my real machine and virtualbox have the same stuff installed.
The only difference I can think of is that on virtualbox I have it running Nouveau instead of NVIDIA driver.

Things that I have installed on my real machine:
Slackware64 14.1 (everything except KDE and Games series)
multilib - downloaded from alien. Everything installed.
flash-player, OpenAL, steam - all downloaded from alien
NVIDIA driver

Things that I have installed on the virtualbox:
Slackware64 14.1 (everything except KDE and Games series)
multilib - downloaded from alien. Everything installed.
flash-player, OpenAL, steam - all downloaded from alien

I just don't know what to make of this.

By the way. The same thing shows up even on virtualbox, but the games work nonetheless.
Code:
ERROR: ld.so: object '/home/heiser/.local/share/Steam/ubuntu12_32/gameoverlayrenderer.so' from LD_PRELOAD cannot be preloaded: ignored.
ERROR: ld.so: object '/home/heiser/.local/share/Steam/ubuntu12_64/gameoverlayrenderer.so' from LD_PRELOAD cannot be preloaded: ignored.
edit: Below pictures that show HL and CS running on virtualbox.
