startx won't start
HI,
I just installed Slackware 10.1 on my primary computer, and I can't get x to start. I went through the xorgconfig process then tried to start x, and I get some error about the driver not supporting some number. Then I reconfigured a couple times and finally I got it to start, but I got some bar at the stop of the screen that was white and the rest of the screen was black. Then I shut off the computer and smacked my head against the wall. (Yes, really.)
So basically.... you have the spec's for your monitor, video card, mouse and keyboard written down and then you use this data to configure the X-Windows System with the configurator from a root console log in session and you get strange behavior?
What does the config file say?
(When you post it, please use the "Code" button or use
after the code text and
before the code text.)

Actually, I don't know the specs. I just took some guesses based on what I used for my spare computer. I really don't know as this is a Dell and I'm not sure how to find the exact specs.

You can enter the system service tag which is a 5 or 6 alphanumeric tag on the back or bottom of the computer. You can get all the info you want about the Dell there.
Write down what manufacturer monitor and model and either check the list for that monitor or look up the spec's with google.com or go to the manufacturers website for it or I think it's monitor.com, unless it's a Dell, and if it is, it will be at the link I posted.
A Slackware New User but oddly is asked for a lot of support now.
Finally installed and got my HP Photosmart 1215vm on a Para Port to work using CUPS.
This seems to be the only way it will accomodate the printer. That was the last thing I needed to do. Now to the /root of this issue.
I had done some tweaking to the xorg, config file and had the issue of not being able to run the X server KDE. Well found my sony display book, and found a few things and used the xorg configurator from the CLI. Well to my suprise I actually inserted the information correctly and now can run at my usual 1280x1024 24Bit color. So now with my Friend Jeff (coolcoot from Activeworlds) he is now making the dive to Slackware 10.1 by getting a usps mo to the slackware folks and get the Full 4 CD set and Book to boot. Another convert and yes I have sent him the link here to also get help if my help does not help. When I get the funds saved, I am also going to purchase the Slackware goodies so I can read and read and read.

What list? It was a dell monitor and this was what it said on the dell site:
DISPLAY, FLAT PANEL DISPLAY, 15, DUAL, E151FPB, MIDNIGHT GRAY, DELL AMERICAS ORGANIZATION
I also found that my video card was an Intel 3D Extreme Graphics card.
(I'm going to see if I can find my monitor's handbook.)
