startx wants libesd.so.0

the reviews suggest slack is worth a try so loaded it today. i unclicked all the sound support since i don't need sound. now startx complains, wanting libesd.so.0. i think enlightenment wants sound even though i didn't install the packages. does anybody know how to get x running without loading the sound stuff? ( at least i think this is a sound issue )

thx if anybody has any ideas.

Well ... I don't use gnome or enlightenment,
but I know that X as such doesn't give a toss about sound :)

So, as a quick and dirty approach, it should be possible
to just delete the .files and .directories that contain gnomes
or enlightenment configuration data from your home directory ...

HIH...

Cheers,
Tink

I have the exact same problem, installed slackware and unloaded sounds.
You said to get rid of any configureation data in my home directory.
I log on as root, so i assumed that /root was my home directory. I found nothing there worth deleting. I also checked /home to be safe, and nothing in there at all.

Am i looking in the wrong place? if so where would i find it?
thanks!

1.) you should not log on as root...add yourself as a user
2.) if you are using a gui file manager, enable 'show hidden files' in view on the menu

Ok, it dawned on me on how to find hideen files
deleted thoes asosiated with X and tried running it again, same problem.
I also tried it with a different user, still same problem.
help! i have hunted for a few hours on this topic. can't find anything that helps.

on a side note: when i "su x" (x being the user) "startx" no longer works, actually none of the bashes do, even if i su root, i have to reboot to get them working again.

1.) i think the instructions were to delete the gnome/enlightenment folders not X folders
2.) why are you su'ing to user? you should log in as user and su to root. have you added the user? "adduser [user]"?

1. su to other users was a side note, i logged in as X
2. I tried it using the other user, but i found nothing. and startx doesn't work still, same error.
this is the entire contents of my home directory:

.Xauthority
.bash_history
.kismet

Thats it, nothing else.
BTW its gnome that should be running.

here is the exact error

"gnome-session: error while laoding shared libraries: libesd.so.0: cannot open shared object file: NO such file or directory"

-----

do you remember which files/folders you deleted?
were they in your ~/. folder or elsewhere?
if you deleted the actual X folders (not the user settings in ~/. )
then you will need to reinstall the X11 packages off your cd

Ok, i've tried making the new user, same old story
the files i deleted were in: /home/x
and this was the file: .Xauthority
nothing else, like i said, there is nothing else to delete.

you said you logged onto gnome, i havn't ever got on it, fresh install, tried to start it up for the first time and got that error.

*UPDATE*

ok, did some research on irc, and got some help.
Here is what solved the problem:

Installed the esound package
then got another libaudiofile.so.0 error
so i installed audiofile-0.2.6-i486-1

now it boots to gnome
not perfect mid you, still missing some icons, but i should be able to solve that

thanks for you help!
