startx returning an error

Slackware 10.0 problem:

I have everything configured, though the monitor and/or video card settings seem to be a little bit off. startx returns an error and wont start and when I check the log it gives me in vi the only 2 errors I see are the following

VGA (0): Given depth (24) is not supported by this driver
Screens found, but none have a usable configuration

I think this either means that I haven't set the sync settings for the monitor correctly or that I haven't loaded the correct drivers for the video card. I've tried running xorgconfig, xorgsetup (xorgconfig several times because that is where you would change the settings for the monitor/video card).

the monitor I use is a generic brand 17" full screen monitor and the video card is a BFG Technologies card that uses the GeForce 6800 gt chipset with 512MBs of VRAM.

I'm not sure which of the cards from the list would match mine (because none are GeForce or nVidia specific) but I know that the VGA one doesn't work (because that's the one I tried). I'm pretty sure that it is the video card that is the problem but I'm rather new to linux and I'm not sure.

I am assuming you haven't installed Nvidia's drivers. So type "vi /etc/X11/xorg.conf" or your perfered text editor and make the video card section read :

That Should work but you won't have 3d acceleration without the driver from nVidia's web site.

From memory, the generic GeForce card in xorgconfig is 349 on the list - it might be worth running it again, and also choosing 16-bit colour rather than 24-bit. I can barely tell the difference on my monitor, which is about as "generic" (ie, cheap) as you can get. It might get you up and running, at least.

Thanks now, I just have one problem (being newish to linux) what web browser can I run from the command line without firing up X.org to download to nvidia drivers.

Thank you guys for your help I got startx working by downloading the nvidia drivers and changing 1 line in my xorg.conf file
