startx issues

Not a big deal, but I was wondering something:

When I start up the computer, login, and then su to root and then back to my user (with various commands in between), startx doesn't work.. it says "command not found" and I have to ctrl alt F2 (i think that's what it is) to login again and then startx works.

Also, what's the proper way to shutdown? is it "shutdown -h now"

it says "command not found
try with the full path : /usr/X11R6/bin/startx

Also, what's the proper way to shutdown?
I used to do : /sbin/poweroff

The su problem has to do with environment variables. The PATH env var is not being set. Do a "su -" for this.
To shutdown just issue the "halt" command.
