startx and xdm

I have slk9 cd installed. Startx and gnome start fine as root. But when I startx as a user I get 3 failed attempts to start the server with xauth errors, then it uses a generic Xterm set of windows.

Going through howtos I saw ref to xdm starting like this.

Is this a permissions with xdm problem, or do I have to copy files to user's home, or run xf86confg as user, or what? XDMCP, chooser?

Log

Take a look at the log /var/log/xdm.log and it should give you some clues as to what caused the problem. If you need further help, then post the log file here. Also if it did not create a xdm.log then "vi /etc/X11/xdm/xdm-config" and check the DisplayManager.errorLogFile: /var/log/xdm.log and make sure that it reads /var/log/xdm.log or where ever your log files are supposed to go. Hope this helps a little.

Post your

o /var/log/xdm.log
o ~/.xsession-error
o /var/log/XFree86.0.log

OK, I'll just copy all this and bring it back to post in the next day or so. My Slack and net are about 3 miles apart. Zip250/sneaker net.

Looking through more of the F diskset howtos on xdm may help yet.

Have you tried gdm and kdm? Because if they work, you know its not an X/driver problem, but xdm specific.
