start gnome/kde in slackware?
You may maybe recall that not so long ago I was actually asking around about a C compiler for Linspire so after some here and there running and experimenting around I found Linspire to be somehow too non-linux and too non-windows, so it's not cheese not meat. this my computer just doesn't work in a linux folder hierarchy, and though i figured out how to install a c compiler....what is a true linux without even a c compiler? it didn't even have m4, damn! so i deinstalled it and tried my luck with one hardass distro: Slackware
Yeah, needed a whole day to figure out how to install the lilo. (isntalled it in the wrong place) so ok, after at least 10 times switching to windows and back and searching for forums and answers i'm kinda annoyed cause i still can't start kde/gnome. when i try to start gnome it just gibes me 2 promt lines that something is wrong, with kde the thing is kinda more, well, crazy, because it gives me an error every 0,5 seconds so i have to logout(tried to start the progs with "startkde" and "gnome-session")
help?

at the prompt, type startx.
you can also type xwmconfig and it will give you a list of the windows managers you can use...choose one, then type startx at the prompt and it will open for you.
by default, slack starts up in command line.

Did you run xorgconfig to setup your xserver? If you never done this before, there are a few things that you will need to know.
What graphics card you got
What the horizonal and vertical sync ranges are for your monitor
What mouse and keyboard you have
It can be confusing the first time you run it. But if you have the info above and take your time and read. You should have no problem.

i ran xorgconfig already, but, judging from the error message, i picked the wrong choice about the vertical sync frequency. but i don't have the manual anymore i think. it there any way to figure it out?

dunno if this will work for you but it worked for me, had the same error msges when i first installed slackware 10.
Juz went over to the xwindows website to download the 4.4.0 release. worked a charm after that. you might also want to switch off framebuffer mode if you are using it.

not exactly an expert myself, but from my understanding x windows is the server that your windows/desktop managers (gnome, kde) needs to run. The problem that you have is not with gnome or kde but with X.
As for changing framebuffer mode, u can edit your lilo to boot with framebuffer off, but i dont know if that's the only solution.

Don't try to recompile x, there is no need for that. As well slackware does not use Xfree but xorg, and I would suggest you do the same, as all linux distros are shifting to that.
Secondly, post your xorg.conf found in /etc/X11/ and we will be able to help you, post your video card specs too (or type lspci and post the output). You may also want to post the make/model of your monitor, as mentioned above.

You try to automagically configure it with xorgsetup or X -configure.
