split screen terminal

Since installing Slackware 12.2 I have had 2 main problems.
I get a Terminal with a split screen where the fonts display in rainbow colours. Wow.
Is there a way to put it right?

Are you using a GUI? If so, what environment, Gnome, KDE, other?

Also, it might help to know which terminal program you're using, personally it sounds like a configuration of Terminal has saved as a Profile of some kind.

Im using the default program that is just called Terminal. And I use the XFCE desktop environment.
Its a new installation so there is nothing unusual that I have configured.

The other terminal programs like XTerm and Konsole work normally.
