what is the bare min to run slack 9 (running X) is an 8 meg card enough...64 ram?

And yes, you should be able to run X with Slack 9 on that machine. Though with 64 megs of ram, probably might want to consider a smaller or lighter desktop, like blackbox or fluxbox, etc.
