Special Config for CUPS with a D-Link print server?
Hey everyone.
I have a old HP LaserJet 4 Plus printer that I want to put on my network, which has a wireless AP, so anyone who has access to my network can print. I tried to set it up last night with CUPS, via the web browser, with a D-Link Print Server (DP-101), but I wasn't sure if I was doing it right. The print server attaches via the parallel port to the printer, and then you connect it via cat5 to my router/hub. Can anyone offer advise/help on how to get it up and running correctly? thanks |
I found a PDF file that helps SuSE users install their DP-XXX: DP-xxx_howto_en_Printserver-Linux.pdf
You can however read inbetween the lines and extract the necessary information for Slackware's CUPS server. Using the CUPS printer admin url http://localhost:631 or using KDE's printer setup you can define a printer with the following characteristics: Printerserver type: LPD IP Address : DP-101's IP address (you should know which one... possibley 192.168.0.1?) Printqueue : lp Printer driver : whatever your attached printer Eric |
UPDATE:
I scored a NIC for the HP Printer, instead of the D-Link and want to put in on the network... Have done some googling, but I can't figure out how to assign a hostname/ip address to the printer. I checked thru the menu but I don't see an option, and I also looked for the manual online, but don't see anything... Any ideas? thanks |
Have you tried telnetting to the nic? There may be additional options there.

Hmm, that's weird that it would be closing on you. Once you set the settings, it will probably be necessary for you to reboot the printer for the settings to take place. Especially if you need it to grab an ip via dhcp. If you got the printer so it's grabbing an ip address. (you can check this by printing off a config page. I think lj4s are Press menu untill you see "test menu", then hit then press the plus till you see self test, then hit enter.
Once you have it grabbing an IP, just open a windows or unix console and type: telnet IPAddressOnConfigPage enter. It probably won't have a password. You should be able to configure hostname and whatnot easier via this. |
missing step
Jvj,
What they are missing is item #10.5 - Press the NEXT button once. Then the display will prompt you for the next item, the first number (octet) of a dotted IP address. In your case, it would probably be 192. After you have it selected, hit the ENTER button to store this value. You can tell it is stored because of the "*" on the display beside the number. Keep cycling through the menu selections, hitting the ENTER button to store the setting on the card's flash memory. These older printers do not have a built-in web server but they do have a telnet server for configuration if the panel dance does not suit you. When I set up a printer like this one, I turn in on for a few minutes and then print a test page (under the TEST menu) to see what IP address, if any, it receives from DHCP/BOOTP. I also print a menu map to aid in configuration. Also, The default IP address for these older HP printers is 192.0.0.192. Hope this helps! |
***BUMP***
Played with this for an hour this am, and I am still unable to get a prompt for putting in the first octect for my printer on the network, even though I can get the menu to set to bootp = yes*... And my print test page doesn't give an info, and I hit netwatch on my LAN to see if there were any packets that weren't coming from my pcs, but I don't see anything...? thanks |
Let me look at my HP 4M printer with a Jetdirect card....
The guide works as expected to navigate through the MIO setup. Pressing the item button again after the bootp message should display IP BYTE 1=XXX What are you seeing after pressing the item button again? The middle of the printer test page contains the MIO status. The third box from the left shows the TCP/IP status. Does it contain a valid IP address? |

And I don't see a valid ip addresses listed between the MIO status and TCP/IP status... |
My fault.
The tcp/ip= menu item is just after the cfg etalk. Press the item/continue button again. |
