Special characters display on windows xp and my lovely slackware 12.1
 

Hi guys,

currently I'm using slackware ver 12.1.

My work requires me to use windows therefore i happen to encounter this problem which baffle me for some time.

When i use notepad, notepad++ or wordpad to open my file, there is a special character which displays as a '?'

However when i open up the same file on my slackware using vi editor and kwrite, it display as an empty space? I tried :set list in VI to display special characters, but it still displays as space.

Anybody know why this happens? What can caused this issue?
For both platforms, what does it use to read the characters in a file?

Hi there,

sounds like a UTF-8 encoding, or rather decoding problem. What byte sequence is actually stored in the file? Is that strange character at the beginning or somewhere in the middle? It could be a Unicode character for which Windows hasn't a shape to display, so it shows a question mark as a replacement char.

The byte sequence is UTF 8. The ? character displays in the middle of a sentence. I think i know whats the problem.

My windows can read chinese characters. Therefore it display a ? when i open that file
My slackware cannot read. Therefore it display as a space.

Hi all,

I have a file with this special character 'Â'. I 1 machine of mine which is able to display chinese characters, this character does not display on my screen

However when i open on my slackware 12.1 machine, it display as 'Â'. May i know what type of character set is set by default in slackware 12.1? is it ascii?
