slack11, 2.6.17.13, using on board via 82xx, lcpi shows all snd devices that should be there. All tests in suggested in the alsa faq site show no problems. I've manually compiled latest stable alsa driver (13). Modprobed appropriate modules. I've looked up several threads about sound problems, but I've still haven't gotten alsa sound to work in kde. Aplayer and artsplay play wav.

KsCD works, but test sound in settings for sound & multimedia don't work. Sound in Xine using alsa don't work. Even the Potato Guy (in kde games) don't have sound (there were no problems in slack10.2, 2.6 kernel). I notice Potato Guy sound setting reverts to no sound setting on reboot.

I'm starting to think the problem is not external to kde. There must be some setting that I'm missing somewhere (I've tried kmix and alsamixer). Anybody have a clue what's going on?

then check if kde's sound server arts is properly is installed.

I've noticed problems with kde sound. Although I run fluxbox, I still use some kde progs, and there seems to be a problem.

If I run kcontrol and test sound system, it works fine. If I go to notifications page, click on event, and test the sound for that event I get no sound.

Doing 'killall artsd', and then restarting artsd seems to work.

By default the some sound cards are muted, try this at the command line to unmute the sound card and set the volume:

try a[U] sudo[ apt-get --fix broken-install --artsd/U] this ought to fix your problems. Please back up you information in mutipule formats before you go ahead with iany apt-gets.

Hi - have you used this on a slackware box? If this worked I'll eat my shorts.

I wonder if is there is an equivalent in slack??? Anyway, I did a complete reinstall and the problem persists. I've made sure appropriate devices are unmuted and volume set. I tried xfce xmms and that doesn't work either. A lot of threads complain about arts. I even tried killing arts but no joy.

By the way, I installed using huge26, and also installed kernel modules in /extra.

morth49er have you tried a distributionlike Ubunut or mepis as they will both auto detect most all sound hardware with little or no user configuration required.

You can test these distributions in live cd/dvd mode if you wish to fully evaluate them on your hardware configuration.

I'm experiencing the same kind of problem (well, problem...). It's only with ogg, not with wav. KDE (apps) just don't play ogg. I'm almost certain that this has to do with Arts. Haven't pinned it down yet, but if someone would have a solution, I'd be grateful.

Flanksteak: Thanks for that suggestion. I have knoppix with 2.6.10 kernel/kde, but it wouldn't allow me to umount and eject the knoppix disk. But I'll try again later.

From reading other threads, I do remember now that in the earlier slack10.2/2.6 kernel that I had to uncheck "enable sound system" to turn off the arts sound, which made the other non-arts programs to work. I tried that,but this time xine just quits and exits somewhere, rather than freezing like it used to. Enabling sound system makes kscd work and now xine just quits. Maybe that's progress. Maybe arts isn't to graceful about handing over sound when it is disabled in kde. But I'm going to try the edit to see if it changes the behaior any.

I beleive the equivalant to the method of repqir a mentioned in my last post is l\salpt-get --fix-broken --install, try this and please post the out come back in this thread.

It doesn't work, unknown command. If you meant slaptget, I don't use that either. However, I hopped over to kde forums and got some additional information about arts. Apparently, it pretty much takes over /dev/dsp, even if one disables the the sound system within kde. About the only solution suggested is to suspend after 1 second (0 seconds won't work). This pretty much leaves one to have to point the device driver to arts in non-kde programs, if capable. Suspending arts after 1 second should do something but my system isn't cooperating. Xine simply quits and disappears now rather than freezing. And that Mr. Potato Guy (this program uses arts) doesn't even make a sound.

Other than the aforementioned problem, everything else seems to works properly.
