Sound stops after kernel compile
Using Slack 9.1 was impressed as alsa detects audigy card from beginning (albeit in a muted state).
However once I've recompiled and customised the kernel slightly, sound doesen't work, nothing in dmesg.
I've read that you need to re-install alsa after every kernel compile... why?
THis seems to have no effect, no modules are loaded, alsaconf can detect nothing. I'm at a loss....

Well, My guess would be that you changed some sound options in the kernel.... Maybe you didn't... It is a newer kernel? If so then your old modules probably won't work... I'm thinking that everything get's replaced in /lib/modules/uname -a with each recompile.... I always delete that folder before I recompile so I know why I have to reinstall alsa... Sorry for the vaugeness, I just don't know in your case. alsa-driver is the package that creates all the sound modules which are placed into /lib/modules/uname -a...... I would take this opportunity to upgrade all of your alsa packages to 1.0.4...... They have sound card specific install instructions on their web site. They'll give you a specific ./configure switch that indicates your card.... Since alsa-driver makes all the sound modules, I always just select the very top level sound support option in the kernel and thats it.... No need to pick support for your individual card in the kernel if your using the alsa packages.... I always recompile about every week or two so I used checkinstall to make my own slak-pak. I leave it in my home folder so I can just removepkg and then installpkg whenever I recompile.... Hope this helps...

I had something like this after upgrading to current from a clean 9.1.
I tried installing kernel-2.6.5, no good.
After much hair tearing I went into /usr/src/linux-2.6.5/scripts & ran MAKEDEV.snd
This set the symlinks for sound correctly & now it works (alsaconf is still baffled about it all )
I read that KDE 3.2.2 has some arts bug fixes.

This is a common problem here at the forum..
When you recompile the Kernel and you are using alsa you MUST NOT add your sound card to the kernel.
During your make *config session for the kernel under the sound section you should only answer (y) to the first question "Enable sound support". all others should be (m) or (n) as required.
Once you have made your new kernel and install it and the modules you will have to reinstall alsa as the modules overwrote the /lib/modules/kernel# alsa files...
once you have done this run:
alsamixer
alsaconf store
and you should be good to go...
If you search the forum there is a much more detailed account of this I have written before....

I had this problem myself. I know someone said not to compile your card into the kernel, but it worked for me...
I also use a Soundblaster Live card.
