Sound Server (Permission Denied error)

Hi Guys,

I had a SBLive! Platiunum soundcard, which is working fine, with the proper drivers....but only in root.

When I log in as a normal user I get the following message:

"Sound Error Informational Message:

Error while initializing the sound driver:

device: default can't be opened for playback (Permission denied)

The sound server will continue, using the null output device"

I've never had this problem before - any suggestions?

I believe you are having the same problem I had, try this

cd /dev/snd
su
chmod 777 pcm*

That should do it.

-Hope this helps.

I usally do the following...

as roo

chmod a+rw /dev/dsp* /dev/mix* /dev/min* /dev/seq*

that usually fixes sound permissions problems... for me anyways.

is like a wildcard

123456*890 * could mean 7 or 456772452435po2i43u5p243oiu5

but in this case pcm*

would mean pcmC0D0c pcmC0D0p pcmC0D1c pcmC0D1p ...

Another solution

I had the same problem and tried the chmod tip, but it didn't work.
However when i edited /etc/group and added my username to the group "audio", it was running fine again.
I'm running Debian Sarge with 2.6.8 kernel using ALSA and a soundcard with the AC97 driver.

Well, Fedora 8 has the same problem with kde when kde-settings-pulseaudio.noarch is not installed. Also, if you ever reboot unexpectedly without shutting down normally, the pulseaudio.pid file still exists in /tmp and the problem will come back until you delete it. This issue may be fixed by relase time, however, but if you install pulseaudio in Slackware you might run across similar issues.
