I had a laptop and desktop running 14.1. I upgraded the desktop to 14.2 and everything (including sound) seemed to work.
Next I did the laptop, and for the first time I can remember I have no working sound in Slackware!
- dmesg shows the sound device has been detected.
- The volume control shows my Kodi audio stream and the level meter is moving.
- In KDE media settings, I can see the speaker status changes when I plug/unplug earphones.
But no audio out of either the speaker or the headphones.
I noticed that /etc/rc.d/rc.pulseaudio was not executable, but it wasn't on my working desktop system either, so I guess that isn't needed?
If there is anything else I should try please advise.
Check pavucontrol and make sure the correct device is selected. It probably defaulted to hdmi.
Indeed, I expected that, but it doesn't even detect HDMI audio on the laptop as it did before (another problem). My working desktop machine detects both HDMI audio and built-in device and they're both enabled. I haven't tested HDMI audio, but the jack is working fine there.
I eventually figured out the reason for no audio output. I had installed Slackware 14.2 but kept my home directory with the old .asoundrc.... Duh! The purpose of the old .asoundrc was to force audio to go to HDMI. (this didn't work with 14.2).
It remains to be seen whether I will figure out how to get HDMI output on the laptop though, because on my desktop setup 'pacmd list-sinks' lists two sinks, one for the HDMI, one for on-board sound, with two nice sliders on pavucontrol to control each (there's a discrete graphics card), however the laptop lists only one.
