Sound on New Laptop
I got a new (used) Sony Vaio VGN-SZ440, I installed Slackware-current x86. Everything pretty much worked out of the box, including wireless. The only thing that is not working is my sound (It is not muted I already checked :-p). Here is my lspci output:

Which version of Slackware do you run? Did you run as root alsaconf? I also have Sony, with similar audio device which is working pretty well. Even internal digital mic works fine (I use it for skype).

Make sure to look at all the channels in alsamixer. This happened to me when I installed Slackware on my netbook. It took me a day or two to finally realized that although the main channel was turned on all the way, the speakers were actually muted. Once I turned those on, everything worked fine.

Have a look at Alien's blog here. Apparently a lot of laptops are having problems with low sound - not only Slackware
