Sound on New Laptop

I got a new (used) Sony Vaio VGN-SZ440, I installed Slackware-current x86. Everything pretty much worked out of the box, including wireless. The only thing that is not working is my sound (It is not muted I already checked :-p). Here is my lspci output:

I don't get any errors when trying to play sound, it just doesn't play, I have adjusted the master volume all-the-way up, and made sure that it was not muted. Any suggestions?

Which version of Slackware do you run? Did you run as root alsaconf? I also have Sony, with similar audio device which is working pretty well. Even internal digital mic works fine (I use it for skype).

Make sure to look at all the channels in alsamixer. This happened to me when I installed Slackware on my netbook. It took me a day or two to finally realized that although the main channel was turned on all the way, the speakers were actually muted. Once I turned those on, everything worked fine.

Have a look at Alien's blog here. Apparently a lot of laptops are having problems with low sound - not only Slackware

I didn't notice this before, but when I booted up today when KDE loads, the KDE message notifier gives me this message:

Quote:

The audio playback device HDA Intel (STAC92xx Analog) does not work.
The sound worked in Windows, does anyone have any ideas.

Make sure that you are part of the audio group. Also, run alsamixer and look through all of the available channels.

I am on Slackware-13.1 x86. I tried alsaconf and it detected HDA-Intel. Ever since I ran alsaconf there is not a mixer icon in the bottom right in KDE, there used to be. When I open the mixer from the menu, Applications->Multimedia->Mixer, I get the error, "No audio device found".

Once I added my user to the audio group, the sound started working fine. I didn't know I would have to do this. Thanks!

No problem! I have the same sound card on my netbook, so I was sure it had to be a simple oversight. Glad everything is working now.
