sound not working in kernel 2.6.6, accessing partitions
when i compiled kernel-2.6.6 i chose to load the ALSA and OSS as modules but when i tested my sound nothing happen, any idea how i can circumvent this problem, to get my sound working. secondly i would like to know how i can mount my other windows partitions and give access to myself, currently only root can access the partitions.
haha, i have been repeating this for a few times now, recompile your kernel and set the sound support as built in <*> for your card/chip. removepkg alsa-driver, you wont need it.
not sure on the win access though, i am also having the same trouble, but used to su to root to do my stuff, so not really bother by it. my fstab is set to users.

That does not work because ALSA mixer can not see the soundcards modules if you build them into the kernel, nor can anyother program that trys to use ASLA because now you have removed OSS Emulation libs that some programs NEED inorder to function (VMWARE being one of them)
That might work on SOME cards but is NOT recommended to do since your braking compatiblity with other programs.
The only thing you should have built in is the basic sound module after that compile ALSA yourself
and I am not sure but if you where to build sound modules into the kernel i dont think you could pass options to thows modules that are now merged with the kernel, rendering some soundcards totally useless!
hi i managed to get my sound working by using kernel-2.4.26 as kernel-2.6.6 gave a kernel panic fault and besides the sound is not working at all. as for the partitions just add "auto,rw,umask=000" in the fstab file thats it i am able to excess.
thanks ppl!
P.S. im going to try to compile kernel-2.6.6 and try to make the sound working, maybe the guides maybe lying arnd got to check that out!!

well, you could be right, i am just speaking from what i have come to realized on my mobo's sound chip of AL650. That is why i am quite puzzled by most folks are recommending people to set up modules & stuff. My built in alsa just simply works with only alsa-lib and alsa-util. I tried it on Slackware and gentoo, both gave the same result, it works.
