sound in netscape/mozilla
 

hey there. i'm having a problem getting the sound to work in netscape/mozilla on slack 9. i installed all the flash, java, and plugger pluggins, and kde has sound, so i assume the sound card is installed correctly, yet all the flash pages i try to open have video but no sound. everything works fine on my red hat 9 partion, so it's not the site. i realize there's not a lot of helpful information here, i was just hoping someone might have a few suggestions as to what to try next, as i'm sort of at a loss. thanks in advance...

I had a similar problem, with different distro though when I was running Mandrake. Still I think this should work.

Since Mozilla is a GTK app, it uses esd not arts. And since you are using KDE, arts is the sound server, and esd may not be running. There are 2 solutions. The first is to run mozilla through another command to force it to run using arts for sound. Unfortunately, I don't remember that command off the top of my head. The other way would be to log into Gnome and in the Gnome Control Center double-click on "Sound", then look within that window for something that says "Enable sound server startup" or something like that. Check that box. Then log out, go back into KDE, and see if you have sound in the flash movies.

I have the same problem, only I use gnome.

I got the sound in mine with the command "artsdsp mozilla".

THAT'S the command I was talking about to force it to use arts. The one I couldn't remember :)

So yeah, dbkluck, either use artsdsp mozilla to run mozilla, or try enabling "sound server startup" in Gnome like I explained above. Either solution should work.

Excellent, that command makes it work. Incidentally, is that something that i'll have to feed into a bash line every time i want to start mozilla in kde, or is there some config file somewhere for mozilla that i can edit to make it automatically use the arts server?

Just change the shortcut for mozilla to use that command.
