sound error with alsa

I am running slackware64 13.37 on kernel 3.1.5. I am running it as a multilib system
I want sound to come through my HDMI monitor. The device code for that is 1.7
when I run alsamixer I get this error: cannot open mixer: Invalid argument
I was able to run it earlier prior to me editing files and not backing them up (stupid I know)
I'm trying to figure out how to get the sound running through this thing. I uninstalled alsa through pkgtool and used the txz files in the iso file to reinstall it. Thanks for any help and if I need to copy and paste any files let me know. Thanks.

[EDIT]
By deleting my .asoundrc file I was able to use mixer. I can still use mplayer -ao alsa:device=hw=1.7 /path/to/sound.mp3 to play a file
I need to figure out how to make that my default device
[EDIT2]
Made it work!!!!
I had to make a new .asoundrc in my home folder
Code:
pcm.!default {
	type hw
	card 1
	device 7
}

ctl.!default {
	type hw
	card 1
}
is how it ended up looking.
[EDIT3]
Unfortunantly I can't use gnome volume control to change the volume... Anyone have a solution for that?

actually to make a sound device to default you may be better off understanding how to use the index= setting available to all users

assuming you do so....you then run alsamixer (which defaults to the default index card) and correct the mixer levels and bob's your uncle.

2) if you can not or will not set an index then you can run alsamixer..press F6 to get to the second device and then make mixer changes
on exit you then run
Code:
sudo alsactl -f /home/name/second.state store
where second is just a name I made up

then you need to use root powers to include an entry in rc.local to

/pathway slack 2/alsactl -f /home/name/second.state restore

which is getting ugly?

so why not set the index?
