That's the codec, you need to find out what card you have...

Post the output of lspci (that's LSPCI)

Oh, and instead of modprobing til your eyes pop out use depmod -a

Cool

I am not that full of knowledge, I only know enough to really jack up a system

I consider myself still very much a newbie, although I just got my box setup to recieve mail tonight so I am happy about that.

Anyway, from the point where you lspci, you will get something that looks like:
Code:
root@masterc:~# lspci
00:00.0 Host bridge: Advanced Micro Devices [AMD] AMD-760 [IGD4-1P] System Controller (rev 12)
00:01.0 PCI bridge: Advanced Micro Devices [AMD] AMD-760 [IGD4-1P] AGP Bridge
00:04.0 ISA bridge: VIA Technologies, Inc. VT82C686 [Apollo Super South] (rev 40)
00:04.1 IDE interface: VIA Technologies, Inc. Bus Master IDE (rev 06)
00:04.2 USB Controller: VIA Technologies, Inc. USB (rev 16)
00:04.3 USB Controller: VIA Technologies, Inc. USB (rev 16)
00:04.4 Non-VGA unclassified device: VIA Technologies, Inc. VT82C686 [Apollo Super ACPI] (rev 40)
00:05.0 Multimedia audio controller: C-Media Electronics Inc CM8738 (rev 10)
00:09.0 Ethernet controller: Realtek Semiconductor Co., Ltd. RTL-8139/8139C (rev 10)
00:0a.0 FireWire (IEEE 1394): Lucent Microelectronics FW323 (rev 04)
00:0b.0 Multimedia audio controller: Creative Labs SB Live! EMU10k1 (rev 07)
00:0b.1 Input device controller: Creative Labs SB Live! MIDI/Game Port (rev 07)
01:05.0 VGA compatible controller: ATI Technologies Inc Rage 128 PF/PRO AGP 4x TMDS
Notice this line:
00:0b.0 Multimedia audio controller: Creative Labs SB Live! EMU10k1 (rev 07)

That's the one to look for. Yours won't say Creative Labs blah blah probably, but that's what you want to see.

Once you find your card, try modprobing different options for it, or head over to www.alsa-project.org or www.opensound.com and get drivers for your card and follow the instructions to install them.

Cool

You won't need alsa for that if your using a recent kernel. I take it you know how to compile your own kernel, if not then learn...it's probably the best thing you can do to help you with linux!

Make sure the approprite module is enabled in sound, and then modprobe it. If it works the edit rc.modules, I had this problem with a via integrated chipset using the ac97 codec.

Oh one last thing, make sure ac97 is enabled as a module and the sound modules, as depmod need these for sound.

Also if you want sound as a user except root then login as root and write the following:

chmod 666 /dev/dsp
chmod 666 /dev/mixer
chmod 666 /dev/audio
