I consider myself still very much a newbie, although I just got my box setup to recieve mail tonight so I am happy about that.
Anyway, from the point where you lspci, you will get something that looks like:

That's the one to look for. Yours won't say Creative Labs blah blah probably, but that's what you want to see.
Once you find your card, try modprobing different options for it, or head over to
www.alsa-project.org or
www.opensound.com and get drivers for your card and follow the instructions to install them.
