Sound does not work in Mozilla or Xchat

Running Slack 10 with the 2.6.11-rc4 Kernel. Mozilla and Xchat won't use system notification or custom .wav files. I can't find anything anywhere on this problem. I may be the dirst in the universe!

There may even be other apps as well, but these two I know. Normal sound is fine - .wmv, .wav, .mpeg, I can play and hear them all.

X-Chat has a option to use an external program to play sounds, try using: play
on it.

They both work on an identical setup on a different partition. The only difference is between the kernels. One is 2.4.26, the other is 2.6.11-rc4.
