Well the programs do not depend that much on the kernel, but on system libraries etc. The drivers (i.e. also known as kernel modules) depend on the kernel version since they are related to the hardware and it's the kernel that provides the basic services and device drivers used by the OS.
It's almost the same as in wndows where you install a different driver for win98, winXP etc for a device, but you can install the same program in any windows version.

hi!
wheeewww....i really need to keep on reading he9x, lots & lots to learn he9x, so maybe thats also why the drivers on windows also choose the version, some works only on win98 then does not on higher versions...great! linux is really really..."superb" OS he9x, i've just been exposed to slackware on my work 3 years ago, but i just monitor it if shutsdown...they use slackware 8 for mail server, vpn, firewall, dial-in, all in one box, a pentium 4 with 256 of ram if i remember it right, our admin uses qmail, i think thats for the mail server, i usually browsed the server to get an overview of linux, hmmm then he taught me some setup on how the mail was scanned, he's using sophos with some library or tool that updates it, also squirrelmail i guess....hmmmm wheewww that server really do many things, i was amazed and learned that really linux was built as a server OS he9x.
