Sound Blaster Audigy SE on new Slackware 12.0

hi Im installing a new slackware system on an old pentium II I found. The Main problem now is with the soundcard, a Sound Blaster Audigy SE which is a great card for its asio capabilities at an affordable price.. From a clean install (slackware 12) it runs ok as root but seemed to have some problems as a user so I tried changing the permissions to everything in /dev/sound/[adsp, dsp, mixer, etc] to I think 660 and added users to group audio etc. now as a user I get repeated constant "aRts had to restart" popups. If anyone knows whats going on and how to get soundcard working pls help thanks...
by the way, the driver is what ever is included in the kernel and it seems to work as root (don't know about asio or full duplex) if there is a better driver Im interested.. thx

Welcome to LQ!

Here's the ALSA information about your soundcard. Is this your module?

It is incorrect to say that the module (driver for the soundchip) works
as root and doesn't work as user. Do not run your system as root; setup
and run as a normal user.

After a clean install of Slackware, open a terminal and as root issue
"alsamixer" and unmute with the M key, then turn up the sliders with the
up arrow key. Then press Esc to close the mixer, then issue "alsactl store"
to save the settings.

EDIT: I can't believe you started out your tenure on LQ by double-posting!
