Sound / Audio Problem
Keep in mind that I'm very new to linux. I have been running slackware for about 2 to 3 days (probably not the best distro to start with) and have worked out all my kinks except for two. One and the main on is the sound. The sound works when I have my headphones plugged in but the when they are not plugged in then I have no sound (meaning the speakers on my laptop are not working).
I have a Gateway P-6831FX The sound card SigmaTel 92HD71B Dual SPDF I've ran alsaconf alsamixer (made sure it wasn't muted). Could anyone tell me what the problem is? To be honest I'm just tired of searching thew these forums lol. I spent a few hours installing slackware (didn't want to partition right). I then i spend the last 3 days getting to know linux and searching threw these forums to get lilo working right my nvidia driver the mouse and learning how to install and running shell scripts :P so if anyone has had this problem or could give me some outside info please do. I'm getting a headache searching threw google and these forums :P |
Hey Dasnippy,
If the headphones work, then it sounds like there's a problem with your speakers not Slackware. At some point we've all forgotten to plug in or turn up and then wondered why the software isn't working. Good luck |
:( its a laptop, they are built in to the mobo and the same volume that would adjust them would also adjust my headphones. I know they work, I dual boot vista on this pc
thanks for the try :) but no go |
Ok a Google search reveals that someone has solved this problem and pointed out to the patch in ALSA making this card work:
http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=676550 http://www.kernel.org/pub/linux/kern...git-alsa.patch I would assume this has been incorporated into kernel 2.6.24, which is the default kernel on Slackware 12.1. Which version of Slackware are you using? |
I have 12.1 and the newest kernal. I've talked to the guy that started that thread on aim and he wasn't a real big help since the patch fixed his and he is runing ubuntu. I have no idea what my problem is

thank u for tryin tho lol. Anyone else know how to fix this problem or how i could start trouble shooting it?
|
So it seems 2.6.24 doesn't have that patch included. I had a quick look at some Linux source code mirrors and I think 2.6.26 has this patch. So you can either patch your 2.6.24 and recompile, or just grab the 2.6.26 kernel and compile. There is a sticky thread (a kernel compile guide) in this forum (it's not that hard really).

edit: nevermind, I just noticed this
