Sound after kernel downgrade: 2.6.7 -> 2.4.26 on Slack 10?

I installed kernel 2.6.7 from /testing, just to check it out. I can select the kernel at boot time, and the system boots. But while I managed to get proper sound on kernel 2.6.7, it's no longer working on 2.4.26.

alsaconf gives error messages like "device not found: /dev/dsp".

Before installing 2.6.7 it worked.

How can I fix this?
