Sony CD-RW recognize, but not possible to use it

I just installed a Sony CD-RW, but I can't use it in k3b :(
Linux recognize what type it is, but can't manage to do anything with it (well, k3b couldn't)

Anyone can help me?!

Here is some information:

In k3b itself it's listed as a writer as well, but when I try to write any data I get a error that there isn't a CD-RW device, so only making a IMAGE is possible

superbondbond 12-27-2004 05:59 PM

Have you tried burning an image from the command line to see if that works? it could be just a problem with k3b.

cdrecord -dev=0,0,0 your_image.iso

(add -dummy if you want to just do a test without actually burning)
see man cdrecord for more options

gian2oo1 12-27-2004 06:12 PM

Are you using a 2.4.x kernel? I think there have been major problems with burning in kernels > 2.4.x

aeNeo 12-27-2004 09:07 PM

Have you tried it as root?

alitrix 12-28-2004 02:17 AM

Lets answer some questions:

This Sony can take 48x for a CD-R and 12x for a CD-RW!!
What's the prob :(

Prove of concept

Are you using a 2.4.x kernel? I think there have been major problems with burning in kernels > 2.4.x
Yes, I use kernel 2.4.23
And I just checked the website of cdrecord (http://www.fokus.gmd.de/research/cc/.../cdrecord.html)
Quote:

Important information: Linux-2.6.8.1 breaks CD/DVD writing for suid root applications
If you have related problems, try to call cdrecord as real root or go back to Linux-2.4
Guess it's not smart to upgrade to 2.6 :)?

And btw, I tryed to compile 2.6 and run it on Slackware but not working :( (Maybe I will start a new topic about that)

Tried it as root
Yeah, same prob :(

//EDIT
Btw, just checked the list of supported Sony CD-RW's, and guess what my version isn't listed :(
List: http://www.cdrfaq.org/faq05.html#S5-1-2
Code:

.....
CRX220A1 (52x52x24/2MB;IDE)
CRX225A (52x52x24/2MB;IDE)
CRX230AD/K (52x52x32/2MB;IDE)
.....

//EDIT
Hm, just found a report on the cdrecord website that my version works with 2.4 kernel :(
http://wt.xpilot.org/cgi-bin/winni/s...10467094233490

(Upading cdrtools, maybe this can fix my problems)

ringwraith 12-28-2004 08:08 AM

I have an old cdrw from Sony that isn't supported by anyone now. I will never buy another Sony.

alitrix 12-29-2004 03:10 AM

See, it isn't that big deal :)

You can buy a Sony CD-RW/DVD-RW, but buy one that is supported by cdrecord ;)
Check the URL that I have paste in a few posts ago where there is a list of all the supported RW's

Isn't this Sony CD-RW not supported by kernel/cdrecord :(?
If not, isn't there another one that supports it?

matt3333 12-30-2004 11:23 AM

Ok i dont know if you got this working yet. But what it seems like that your trying to do scsi emulation. Did you add the line in liloconf? append='scsi-ide'? something like that? did you add that? did you put the device name like /dev/sr0? in your fstab? did you make sure scsi emualtion is seeing it when you boot so it should say something like NAME OF YOUR DEVICE: /dev/sr0 something lik ethat then you put that in the fstab? am i making any sense? if you upgrade to 2.6.4 you dont need scsi emulation so it might help you out!! If you decide to upgrade and it doesnt work you can always switch back over to 2.4.2x. If cdrecord can see it when you do a cdrecord -scanbus then you should be able to burn! If you need help just tell me i should be able to help you getting it working! Hope this helps!

Matt
