xmission is in the US but its very nice.

You could use my slack-mirror-speedtest.sh script. By default, it has the US servers in there, but just copy and paste servers from your region and run it. The script will output a sorted list of of mirrors based on their speed. If the mirror doesn't respond or the transfer speed is below 10kb/s, it is marked as a failure and displayed a the bottom of the other results.

The list of mirrors in /etc/slackpkg/mirrors is both incomplete and not at all guaranteed to be up to date. I recently updated that list to some extent, but it was mainly to remove dead mirrors - I didn't even attempt to add new mirrors.

Probably a better option is to grab this: https://mirrors.slackware.com/mirrorlist/ and use it (after processing to select/deselect particular countries.

It's of course up to the users, but I'd like to know why more people aren't using an entry with the mirrors.slackware.com redirector in it, e.g.:
Code:

# cat /etc/slackware/mirrors
https://mirrors.slackware.com/slackware/slackware64-current/

I use it most of the time, but sometimes I have to use another mirror when it selects an out of date mirror for me...

Quite frequently, it would provide me a mirror that was slower than 1MB/s. That's ultimately why I found that script and modified it to work with Slackware. Now I can select mirrors who consistently give me fast speeds.

But I never knew that the mirror list for slackpkg was considered to be incomplete and outdated, so I'll probably modify the script to provide a link to the mirrorlist

I don't know about that, does this mean I shall take this as my source, and will be redirected automatically?

Correct.

For everyone:

If you're getting redirected to a consistently slow mirror, let me know - I can turn its "priority" down.
If you're getting redirected to a mirror that is consistently out of date, let me know - I can (try to) reach out to the maintainer and either get it fixed or remove it from the redirection database. That said, note that some mirrors do not sync as often as others - the one that I'm redirected to from home seems to sync once a day, so it rarely has updates on the same day that they hit the tree.

Can you say more about how that redirection mechanism works? Do you use a local instance of mirrorbrain compiled from this https://mirrors.slackware.com/mb-sources/ or some homemade solution?

average_user 12-11-2017 05:45 AM

okay I just found that it says mirrorbrain here https://mirrors.slackware.com/slackw...ckware64-14.2/. I rarely access this site with browser.
