Solved modules_install Error 137

While trying to run make modules_install on my little EEE PC (0601) I kept running into the problem

Code:
*** [_modinst_post] Error 137 ***
it wouldn't finish the depmod

after checking /var/log/syslog it reported running out of memory so I check and my "swap" partition and for some reason had not activated at boot time. So with my "swap" partition being at sda1 I issued

Code:
swapon /dev/sda1
then retried

Code:
make modules_install
and everything worked just fine.
