software does not seem to start

programs like mozilla, xchat, opera and many other doesn't start?! i just got net on the box! also gnome doesn't start. it says that fonts are missing or something like that?! can anyone help me?

jpbarto 09-10-2003 11:29 AM

what errors are programs like mozilla and xchat providing?

plm 09-10-2003 12:03 PM

they can't start. i execute them and they seem to be loading a while, but they don't start.
when i run xchat on the console:
# xchat
No fonts found; this probably means that the fontconfig
library is not correctly configured. You may need to
edit the fonts.conf configuration file. More information
about fontconfig can be found in the fontconfig(3) manual
page and on http://fontconfig.org

looks like it's from the fonts. what am i supposed to edit to this fonts.conf? i took a look at it, it's written in xml, but i have no idea what eo edit there.

I had simular problems with KDE and programs not starting. I just switched to gnome. How fresh is your install? Can you just reinstall or do you have massive amounts of time into the current one?

jpbarto 09-10-2003 12:27 PM

You said that Gnome was also complaining about the fonts so I would agree that there is a font problem in some respect. What font packages have you installed? Are you missing some from the gnome libraries by any chance? When you installed did you skip something from the Gnome choices?

plm 09-10-2003 12:33 PM

i did a full install. i first installed slack 8.1 full install, and after that i upgraded to 9.0 everything with the command upgradepkg --install-new /... so i haven't skipped anything i guess

i fixed it it and everything is working now. i only downloaded a new version of fontconfig and installed it and everything was ok.:)

must be a problem with the upgrade. glad to hear you're up and running.
