Smoothwall on Slackware

I was just wondering if it is possible, if yes, is it practical to install smoothwall so it is funcional simultaniously with slackware. The reason I was wondering was I like to run KDE on slaqware, and KDE with open office would make it very easy to edit the ACL list for the smoothwall proxy. I'm sure you could set slackware to do the same things that smoothwall does, but it seems like too much work. If that is not the case, feel free to correct me.

Uh, no.

SmoothWall is it's own distrobution, you can't run SmoothWall on top of Slackware.

You could dual boot Slackware and SmoothWall, but having a entire Slackware system installed with KDE and Open Office to edit a single file...is completely ridiculous.

I thought that Smoothwall was a stand-alone product. I've never used it, though. I would think that the smoothwall install would wipe anything that's already on the drive. The page says taht the box then becomes a dedicated firewall.

The above comments are correct. I was just hoping somebody knew how to merge them togethor. (also, I have another reason for doing this, I am out of boxes and I got a job where I have to work with slackware, so I need to learn it quick. but this is my home routrer and I dont want to give up my firewall/proxy)

What functions of smoothwall are you trying to replicate? If you are just looking for an easy to configure firewall+router there are a bunch out there that I'm sure will work well from within slackware. I'm pretty sure that smoothwall is just a nice web interface for iptables which is built in to all modern distros.

For a KDE based firewall front end to IPtables, GuardDog is quick to install and useful.

Find it at http://www.simonzone.com/software/guarddog/

The question may sound just a tad silly but why don't you SSH into your smoothwall box with a program like WinSCP3 ( by windows ) or with an SSH client form a slack box and then edit it with the program you like more ? this would be way easier and really more pratical

I am using ssh, and winscp3. So my question is now invalid. But mostly it is simply "is it possible" type of question.

Smoothwall and IPCop are a lot more than just scripts setting up iptables. They end up building their own kernels for a start.

IPCop is built on LFS these days, I have wondered about trying to build it on Slackware as Slack is fairly vanilla compared with the Fedoras of the World.
