Smooth 2D experience?

Hi,

I have Slackware installed on my laptop, a Thinkpad X24. This laptop has a Radeon Mobility M6 videocard with 8 Mb of videoram. What I want is to have a smooth experience when moving windows in X, that kind of stuff. Right now the windows are moving quite ok, but still lagging somewhat. How can I enable smooth 2D graphics on my desktop? And best 3D if possible too. I know it is possible to get it smoother than I have now, since installations of Ubuntu and Suse gave a nice smooth X.

I believe the official ATI linux drivers do not support my card, it is too old (correct me if I am wrong). I therefore tried something called dri in X and I succeeded. However, dri only works with 16 bpp depth, and windows are still lagging a little. When trying to go higher the 8 Mb videoram is not enough. Since this is dedicated videoram, it did not work to set, say "VideoRAM 16384" in xorg.conf, I only get corruptions on screen.

Please help give me suggestions what I can do to get the smoothest desktop experience. Right now I am using Xfce as windowmanager.

Thanks,

/Mack
