SMART status reports problems on all drives!
I just did the last slackpkg update and it included 5.22 plasma.
I exited KDE and restarted it. When it started I got a SMART status notice for each of my 4 hard drives. The msg went as follows: The storage device ST33500630AS ('/dev/sdd') is showing signs of instability. This is repeated for each drive. When I umount each drive and do an e2fsck on them everything looks fine. Anyone else seeing this? Should I be worried? Thanks. |
So you're seeing this when you type startx and KDE-plasma starts up? Or from run level 4? I updated KDE; I'm not seeing this.

No issue here when I run startx.
Did you do an install-new when you upgraded? There was a new status package. Don |
I recommend installing/using a smart query. Some BIOS/UEFI versions have some info but in Slackware you could get https://slackbuilds.org/repository/1...gsmartcontrol/ and not only query but run various tests in real time.

I'm seeing the same thing on my 10-year-old laptop, with /dev/sda "showing indications of instability."
This laptop has been my "guinea pig" which gets blown up every 6 months or so. It's had W*****s 7, Slackware 13.37 thru the current -current (which it has now), and Mint 18 thru 20 installed with no problems whatsoever. Not bad for an 2011-vintage Hitachi 750 Mb hard drive. |
Thanks for the replies. I ran smartctl and it shows with the -H option the overall-health passed on each drive. Using the -s option does show some read errors read errors and it looks like the time left for each drive is 0 in some cases. These drives are well over 10 years old. Good thing I'm VERY anal about backups. I guess it's time for new drives. Marking this as solved.

I saw this today after upgrading my computer, concerning an old drive that has noticeable errors where a few files have been corrupted. I've already salvaged what I could off the drive already.

I wonder if this isn't a problem with the upgraded package? Because there were a couple people in the gamingonlinux discord, who also noticed this recently. It seems odd and/or coincidental that a number of drives go.

All's good
Well, I installed a new drive with 4 partitions taking the place of the old 4 drives. No SWAP. Got done just in time for the UFC PPV fights.
All's well with the new 2TB drive. No SMART errors. Now about updating the rest of my computer...could take awhile. I'm REALLY pleased with the cost of hard drives now days. I paid 4 times that much for each of my old drives! |
