slow LAN connection
I have a RealTek RTL8139C 10/100 mps NIC card on Slack9. However, when it loads automatically the 8139too driver, and try connecting to my Windows Machine on the connection is very slow.
I have a 10mbps hub and the NIC autodetects a 10mbps HD connection. When i boot the machine on RH9 the connection is fast despite using the same card, driver and hub and at 10baseTX-HD. What is wrong with my slack connection. PS: i have no firewall enabled. Eric |
try to update your kernel, get the latest one from http://www.kernel.org

there is a problem with rtl8139
try to look through a mailing-list archieve http://www.scyld.com/pipermail/realt...x/realtek.mbox there are a lot of solutions, but... yes, try to change your kernel |
I have RTL8139s in several machines without problems. The C stepping and newer seem stable.

Did you look to make sure that the card is running at 100mbps full-duplex? You can type mii-tool at a command prompt as root and it will show you output like the following:
eth1: negotiated 100baseTx-FD, link ok I've had a network card go bad and it started running in HD mode. |
