I checked for the libata drivers in the kernel configuration ( make menuconfig ) but i can't find the libata drivers. Do i have to download them? How can i add the new drivers to the kernel after that?

From what I can tell the message "Driver "sd" needs updating - please use bus_type methods" really is just a warning and doesn't mean anything.

I'm wondering if you have the same problem booting with the sata.i kernel?

sata.i hda=noprobe,hdc=noprobe

I just realized, I was thinking of Slackware 11's kernels had an sata.i kernel. Apologies for the confusion.

Despite the warning message about the Driver sd needing updating, are you able to boot the CD and see your hard drives? sda, sdb?

Hi,

You did look at the BIOS an confirm that 'AHCI' is set.

Code:
excerpt from 'libATA FAQ'

Recommended (where BIOS permits): Change BIOS IDE mode from legacy" or "combined"
mode to "AHCI" (recommended), "RAID" or "native".

All i get from dmesg | grep [sh]d is
hda: ide_wait_not_busy() skipped
hdc: ide_wait_not_busy() skipped
hdd: Slimtype DVDRW SOSW-833S, ATAPI CD/DVD-ROM drive
hdd: ATAPI &£X DVD-Rom DVD-R CD-R/RW drive, 2048kB Cache
Driver "sd" needs updating - please use bus_type methods

IF i try fdisk /dev/sda (or sdb and sdc) i get the message that fdisk could not open sda sdb...

Is there some other way i can check if sda is recognized?

The Slackware 2.6.24.5 kernel has the support;

Code:
~#cat /boot/config-generic-2.6.24.5 |grep -i sata
# CONFIG_BLK_DEV_IDE_SATA is not set
CONFIG_SATA_AHCI=y
CONFIG_SATA_SVW=y
CONFIG_SATA_MV=y
CONFIG_SATA_NV=y
CONFIG_SATA_QSTOR=y
CONFIG_SATA_PROMISE=y
CONFIG_SATA_SX4=y
CONFIG_SATA_SIL=y
CONFIG_SATA_SIL24=y
CONFIG_SATA_SIS=y
CONFIG_SATA_ULI=y
CONFIG_SATA_VIA=y
CONFIG_SATA_VITESSE=y
CONFIG_SATA_INIC162X=m
By chance have you tried the 2.6.24.5.smp kernel?

Not to be picky but you stated the 2.6.24.5 was being used (post #3).

I was just playing with a newer machine and I had the same problem as you're describing Rheibio. After I went into my bios and turned off my BIOS Raid, and booted the Slackware 12.1 dvd with the hugesmp.s kernel it detected my hard drive as /dev/sda. Perhaps there's a setting in your BIOS that needs to be flipped?

Well I made some search and it seems there are some issues with this chipset. You may need to change your bios settings.

This page says ata_piix driver supports it:
http://hardware4linux.info/component/27609/

But this one says you may need bios configuration:
http://groups.google.com/group/comp....10cb0f7a201ad1

A related topic from LQ:
http://www.linuxquestions.org/questi...no-dma-503699/

A thread from LKML:
http://lkml.org/lkml/2005/5/18/226

The kernel description of ata_piix says it supports ICH5/6/7/8 but apparently there are some issues with certain ICH6 variants.

My bad, I thought that the 2.6.24.5 and the 2.6.24.5.smp were the same thing. By the way, if I want to modify the kernel I have to install slack again, right ? I deleted the old partitions because I thought I was able to
make the new ones.

Hi,

You still haven't posted the BIOS setting for your machine. Is it set to 'AHCI'.

Did you check the 'libatat faq' link that was posted?

Speaking of which, I've got the Acer Bios V1.80 version and it seems I can't configure anything, just passwords, silent boot, etc. Do you know anything about it ?

Ok there is at least one person who could get this chip to work on Slackware 12.1:

http://p4c0.wordpress.com/2008/06/18/slackware-121-dma/

I wonder why hda=noprobe didn't work for you. ata_piix is compiled into the generic kernel.
