slow disk reads: Slackware 10 kernel 2.6.7

Is anyone else getting slow hard disk reads after installing Slackware 10 with kernel 2.6.7? hdparm shows that I do have dma enabled on the drive (udma6), but it confirms what I experienced - a disk transfer rate of about 3Mb/s! On Slackware 9.1 with kernel 2.4.24 I was getting close to 50Mb/s...

Same kernel version, same Slackware version, different speeds. I have about 35 MB/sec which is about the same using Slack 9.1 / kernel 2.4.x . I use a custom compiled kernel.

bash-2.05b# hdparm -i /dev/hda

/dev/hda:

Model=SAMSUNG SV8004H, FwRev=QR100-07, SerialNo=0429J1FRB15155

AdvancedPM=no WriteCache=enabled
Drive conforms to: ATA/ATAPI-6 T13 1410D revision 1:

How do I know if it's using dma?? Is it? How do I check the speed?

bash-2.05b# hdparm -t /dev/hda

/dev/hda:
Timing buffered disk reads: 96 MB in 3.02 seconds = 31.75 MB/sec
bash-2.05b#

Why is it so slow?

2.6.7 kernel is messed up

I cant enable dma or anything my drive is such a bottel neck it is not even funny.

Code:
/dev/hda:
 multcount    =  0 (off)
 IO_support   =  0 (default 16-bit)
 unmaskirq    =  0 (off)
 using_dma    =  0 (off)
 keepsettings =  0 (off)
 readonly     =  0 (off)
 readahead    = 256 (on)
 geometry     = 65535/16/63, sectors = 156355584, start = 0
Code:
 hdparm -d1 /dev/hda

/dev/hda:
 setting using_dma to 1 (on)
 HDIO_SET_DMA failed: Operation not permitted
 using_dma    =  0 (off)
I have posted in other places on this board but no one has any ideas on this yet, I am bumed out.

*edit* WOW!!

Code:
/dev/hda:
 Timing buffered disk reads:   12 MB in  3.11 seconds =   3.86 MB/sec
and you thought yours was bad

I would check the bios config to see if features enabled or not.

Quit your programs, exit X and redo the test
