slocate error

after installing full slackare 10 i decided to remove web browsers and windows managers from the Kpackage . After that tried to do updatedb and i got an error so i downloaded the source slocate-2.7.tar.gz .The ./configure make make install didn't work . Now the HELP file mentions that .

" If the install script does not work, a manual setup will have to
be done. The first thing to do is copy the slocate binary to a directory
in your path. Usually the directory:

/usr/local/bin/ "

my questions is do i have after extracting with tar -zxvf slocate-2.7.tar.gz to move the slocate folder to /usr/locate/bin ?

Is this what the help file asks me to do ?

I don't think it's about slocate folder, but the executable file.

If just the make install failed, it must be somewhere in that folder (slocate).

only ./configure works with no error

the makecommand gives error
root@abu:~/slocate-2.7# make
cd . && /root/slocate-2.7/missing automake-1.4 --gnu Makefile
WARNING: `automake-1.4' is needed, and you do not seem to have it handy on your
system. You might have modified some files without having the
proper tools for further handling them. Check the `README' file,
it often tells you about the needed prerequirements for installing
this package. You may also peek at any GNU archive site, in case
some other package would contain this missing `automake-1.4' program.
make: *** [Makefile.in] Error 1

the automake-1.4 exists in my system but just in case i removed it and reinstalled it but same error

i have no idea

Why don't you try to install from tgz ("slackware/a/" directory) with pkgtool (console)?
