slak10 alsa and what happened to /dev/dsp?

i finally went back to try configuring my 2.6.10 kernel
started over and removed the alsa pkg, and tried installing
alsa drivers.....

after installs
i type:
Code:
alsamixer
and i get
Code:
alsamixer: function snd_ctl_open failed for default: No such file or directory
this wasnt an issue for me in 9.0(back then i might have been out of it )

alsa after starting x
i get
Code:
Error while initializing the sound driver:
device /dev/dsp can't be opened (Is a directory)
The sound server will continue, using the null output device.
message

this stinks !
i had problems w/this before and gave up aftrer hours of searching,
and went back to 2.4.# kernel

Thanks

1. make sure you compiled the drivers for your sound card into the kernel
2. do some research on udev

sorry if my advice is basic, im a noob too

Which alsa package(s) did you remove?
Check to see if you have an /etc/rc.d/rc.alsa script file. If not you will need to re-install alsa-utils package. If it is there, make sure it is executable so that it will start at boot.

You might want to run alsaconf as root. May not help, but at this point, it can't hurt either.

Just to clarify, are you installing the 2.6.10 from /testing from CD#2 on the 10.1
CD's? Or a custom 2.6.10 ?

IF its a custom 2.6.10 and your having trouble, an idea that you might consider
is to start with the provided 2.6.10 and then configure that one to your liking -
coming from a ' start with a working one, and make it better ' approuch.

IF you are installing 2.6.10 from /testing, I take it that you know what sound card you
have, and you:
Installed the provided alsa drivers found in the same directory?
Did you see if you could and/or have to have its module load from rc.modules ?
Is it compiled into the kernel? and if so, is there a 'dmesg' about it?
Or ANY 'dmesg' output regarding your sound card?
Reconfigure alsa with alsaconf before alsamixer? (you didn;t specify that, just making sure)

Just throwing ideas at you trying to help - there are a lot of variables in this.

In regards to your error:
Quote:
Error while initializing the sound driver:
device /dev/dsp can't be opened (Is a directory)
The sound server will continue, using the null output dev
Thats a KDE message right? solve the first issue, and this error will go away.

also uninstalled artsd pkg, and compiled new....
q3 quake3 sound now works with this in the command line:
Code:
killall artsd ; quake3 ; artsd &
