slackware64 v14 problems with amarok - no sound, looks dead

I can't get sound from amarok but vlc works fine. Since vlc works I am assuming that the basic sound system (alsa) works fine. Last night it looked like it was playing music files but was just not giving me sound. Today it just acts dead. I tried re-installing it but it is still dead. any suggestions?
