Slackware64 14.1 on UEFI - no USB keyboard during boot
 

Wasn't able to find any info on this after searching for an hour or so, but I'm sure it's probably something simple.

So I just got my first board with UEFI, and I'm trying to install Slackware on it so I can start learning all the new options/features/problems/etc with it. When I boot from the Slackware DVD using UEFI, I can hit tab to get to a GRUB boot menu, with the options of the huge.s kernel, huge.s kernel with KMS, and detect/boot installed operating systems. On this particular menu, my USB keyboard is working.

When I select the first option, the system starts booting, up until the point where it asks about the keyboard map. At this point I have no USB keyboard support, so I cannot continue the installation.

I made sure legacy USB support is enabled in the UEFI menu, so I'm guessing there's probably some special parameter I need to pass along to GRUB for this to work, but I can't find anything about it.

Any ideas?

What mobo do you have and is the bios/uefi image the latest? I have an Asrock Z77 Extreme that sometimes does that and it is only solved by power recycle. An oddity is that this mobo has a PS/2 connector for keyboard and if I hotplug one of those, it works. Weird.

I have a Gigabyte GA-990FXA-UD3 rev 4.0, with UEFI version F2 which is the latest one available for download on their website.

I have power cycled a few times, and each time the problem persists. This board also has a single PS/2 connector, but I don't have a PS/2 keyboard on hand at the moment.

Check the UEFI settings for USB. Make sure to enable all legacy USB options.

This may not help. It didn't help for my ASRock board. I had to update the UEFI firmware because it was a bug. However, the keyboard was working in Linux, it wasn't working in the UEFI menu.

I only have one option called Legacy USB Support, and it is enabled. The way its' description is worded, it sounds like USB support is enabled for UEFI all the time, and enabling this option just makes it work for legacy mode as well as UEFI. Either way, it is indeed enabled. The only other option I have mentioning USB is Onboard USB Device, and it is also enabled.

Since you mentioned it, I wanted to say that the keyboard works in the UEFI menu as well.

It's behaving as if the USB driver isn't being loaded from the initrd, I've had that issue on some other machines in the past, and I had to add some extra options to the mkinitrd script. Since this is the initrd on the official Slackware disc though, I'm assuming it already has all of those things in it.

You can try using a USB to PS/2 converter temporarily. They usually pack them with USB keyboards.

I ran into the same problem with that motherboard on the weekend.. Try moving the usb keyboard/mouse from the red usb ports to one of the blue ones, or get a usb -> ps2 adapter.

Look if iommu option is enable in your bios.

I can't speak for OP but it sounds the same. So to be clear, this is apparently not simply some setting but a bug that only occurs occasionally, at least for me. When it works I have keyboard and mouse everywhere. When it doesn't work neither works anywhere and I must hotplug a PS/2 keyboard or power down. Sometimes the bug persists through 2 or more power cycles but then clears up. The bug seems to be in the UEFI bootloader.
