Slackware64 14.0 - X fails to start as non-root + Termination as root freezes sytem
Hey,
I have fresh, full installation of Slackware64 and everything works fine except problems with video module/card.
My computer has GPT partition scheme and UEFI and I boot using Slackware rescue disc which I created during setup in BIOS Legacy (probably irrelevant).
So, first problem was when booting...
boot: vmlinuz root=/dev/sda3 ro vga=791
During booting process I get blank screen and nothing happens (keyboard worked tho since CTRL+ALT+DEL was working).
Tried few random values with VGA parameter, still blank screen.
Then used 'nomodeset' without any vga options and it worked.
After successful was able to start X as root without problems (when starting X I can see 'negative' colors and random pixels + 'flashbacks' from previous session. For example I can see part of web page).
But when tried to start X as non-root it took very long time before anything happened, same actually happens as root occasionally.
After X started I can see desktop and welcome message asking what settings I want to use (XFCE) but it disappears immediately and leaves me with blank screen.
Also something to note is that sometimes I'm able to terminate X with CTRL+ALT+BACKSPACE but sometimes nothing happens, same as root, sometimes termination just freezes system (I don't get blank screen when starting X as root but when I want quit X session and terminate, it freezes, just blank screen and nothing happens).
You have an Intel videocard, it will not work properly with X when kernel mode setting is disabled (for example by using the nomodeset option). Also, the vga= option is deprecated with KMS drivers, use the video= option, for example
Code:
video=1366x768@60
for a resolution of 1366x768 at 60Hz refresh-rate.
One question - Is this is a laptop with hybrid graphics card
Another question - How are you able to boot gpt from lilo ?
I'm not sure, device manager in Windows 8 lists only one adapter -- 'Intel HD 4000'.
And I don't boot with LILO, I have ELILO but I can't get it to work, I get kernel panic saying something 'not syncing VFS: unable to mount root FS on unknown block(8,5)'.

I tried 'vga=normal' but I still got blank screen, here is dmesg -- I used 'video=800x600@60' to as parameter here.

Also one funny thing to note is that I was able to startx as non-root user and also created couple test accounts and was also able to start X with new created users, even tho fun ended after I tried to kill one user X session by logging out.
After reboot I wasn't able to startx as non-root anymore.
So this is module thing for sure, but not sure at all how to fix.
Oh, and even tho computer freezes I am still able to use SSH, if that can help.
I just realized that you are using UEFI. There are two things that come to my mind:
- Some laptops do not initialize the hardware in the way the video driver would expect it when using UEFI, in order to boot faster. Try to boot in legacy mode and see if that helps.
- UEFI support is much better in Slackware -current, so trying that may also be a good idea.
